Practices like gaming the pension plans (especially of these big cap whales, like the 'Beamer and MMM) will ensure that the bear goes on a LOT longer than anyone anticipated...it will suck earnings out of these companies for years, until and unless the rules are changed for pensions accounting. Personally, I think if they were marked to market once a year it would end alot of this BS (as well as hold the pension fund managers to higher and more conservative investing standards).
