I think you'll be happy with either firewall. Both are topnotch programs. Why not try ZA free and see if it does everything you're looking for. I'm using ZA Pro only because I paid for it. Had I to do it over, I'd go the freebie route. I've heard of no problems with AdAware so I think it's a good choice as well.

I don't use instant messaging but have seen many recommendations for Trillian. It handles AIM, Yahoo and several other messaging programs.

I've been using this RegCleaner for quite some time and haven't run into a problem yet.

An addon to my previous post about ZoneAlarm. From yesterdays LangaLetter.

"New Free ZoneAlarm
On Tuesday, Zone Labs released ZoneAlarm 3.1. If you're a ZoneAlarm user, you should soon get an update notice (the notifications are staggered over time to prevent everyone from trying to download the new code at once.) You also can grab the code manually by going to zonelabs.com .

In addition, ZoneAlarm Pro was recently updated to version 3.0.133. Similarly, you can update automatically via the built-in update/reminder agent, or by visiting the above site and manually grabbing a copy.

The Pro upgrade is only a little different from the previous version, but the free version is a major update, and already is generating some strong--- and so far, mostly negative--- reader comments: stability problems, resource issues, and more.

But the numbers of reports I've gotten so far is too small to serve as a basis for a reliable conclusion. Plus, it's a fact of human nature that far more people take the time to write when they're angry about a product than when they're happy with one. (I guess we all tend to complain more than praise. <g>)

But by the time you read this newsletter, enough people should have used the new version of ZoneAlarm that we can begin to draw meaningful conclusions."

Might want to use an older version until the final verdict is in.

Marty,

I too have been happy with RegCleaner for more than a year. Just be careful if using the unistall software portion of the program that you click the Uninstall button to uninstall a program, and not the adjacent Remove Selected button, which removes the program from the uninstall list, making it very difficult to actually uninstall it. The Remove Selected button is for already unistalled programs that still linger in the unistall list. A handy feature when used at the right time. :-)

No, RegCleaner doesn't appear in the uninstall programs list. I've always removed these types of programs by just deleting the folder that you installed it in. I did search the registry, and sure enough, there is an entry under applications for RegCleaner. I don't know how to easily remove registry entries for programs that don't appear in the currently installed windows list, except by a program such as RegCleaner. It's a catch-22.
