Found this in a newsletter I received yesterday:

Windows XP Tip of the Day

Tip #673: Manually Locate and Download Java Update

windows.about.com

In a previous tip, I mentioned that when you first install Windows XP, it already needs a Java update, which can be downloaded via Windows Update. Since that tip was posted, several people have written to tell me that they can't find the update any more. There have been a couple security updates since the original Java update, so if you don't get Java updated by following the normal automatic update, you can locate and download it manually.

Start at the update site:
windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Ignore the scanning for update stuff. When the page is fully loaded, look for the link along the left side of the page called Personalize Windows Update, under the Other Options section. Click that, and then in the right-hand pane you should see a check box for "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also." Check that, then click Save Settings.

Now, under the "See Also" section in the left-hand pane, you should be able to click a "Windows Update Catalog" link. Click that, and when the right side loads, click "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems."

Select your Operating System and language, then click the down arrow for Advanced Search Options. In the text box under "Contains these words" type "java" without the quotes, then click Search. You should get 1 Critical Update and Service Pack hit, which you can view by clicking on that phrase. Then you should see "Security Update, March 4, 2002 - (Posted Date: July 10, 2002)." Click on the Add button, then click "Go to Download Basket." In the Basket, enter a download destination (for example c:\downloads, then click the Download Now button. Once it completes (it's pretty large), you can run it from the location that you specified by double-clicking on it.
