Thanks, Josh. I'm having a great evening, listening to "Love Is All Around" on a soundtrack album I received today from eBay.

When I was a kid we used to sneak in the fire wanagan at night and swipe WWII surplus C-rats. The next day we would go on a hike and play like we were fighting fires. In those days the Rats had a little pack of four cigarettes. We didn't inhale. Naw... We did! That was Clinton, I forget.

Later in that same wanagan it became my job to pack firepacks, and to use them on smokechaser fires. My very first fire was in a big cedar tree -- maybe 75 inches in diameter, and hollow with fire inside all the way to the top. I had a crosscut saw and a pulaski, and though I had felled trees and snags, no way was I prepared for that cedar. They don't call 'em widowmakers for nothing, although I wouldn't have left one at my age. I cut a notch into it, and retreated a safe distance and watched it burn through all night. When it fell to the ground I finished the job. Obviously, I lived through it.
