KLA-Tencor Considered Banning Coke Over Stock-Option Stance
By Cesca Antonelli

San Jose, California, July 31 (Bloomberg) -- KLA-Tencor Corp. executives debated removing Coca-Cola Co. vending machines from the company's campus after Coca-Cola embraced an accounting change that's being opposed by many computer-related companies.

The world's largest soft-drink maker this month said it will begin to treat stock options issued to employees and executives as an operating expense.

Officials at KLA, the world's biggest maker of semiconductor- inspection equipment, were so upset they drafted a letter announcing a ban on Coca-Cola products that mistakenly was sent to staff, KLA spokesman Kern Beare said. KLA hasn't banned the drinks, he said

KLA's 2001 profit from operations would been $279.4 million instead of $373.06 million, a 25 percent drop, had the company expensed options. The company's 2000 net income would have been cut 22 percent, $197.6 million instead of $253.8 million.
