"They are too big to fail, .... the government should not let them fail"

These airlines all failed. They weren't exactly small and the government didn't keep them in business:

Pan Am
Eastern
Braniff
People's Express

Other airlines have gone bankrupt, wiping out shareholder equity to satisfy bond holders:
America West
Continental
Northwest (I think)

TWA was on the verge of a second bankruptcy before AMR took them over.

UAL can't even get the breathing space of a merger attempt. The Dept. of Justice will stop that before it ever gets off the ground.

I've said I prefer LUV because of its financial stability. That has worked so far:

The government won't let UAL fail?

What's happening here?

UAL hired bankruptcy attorneys
UPI-COMTEX MARKET ALERT - August 02, 2002 13:46
CHICAGO, Aug 02, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Financially pressed United Airlines Friday confirmed a Business Week report it hired bankruptcy attorneys. The news sent United stock prices tumbling.

A $5.22 stock is down $1.11, more than 20%.

I think LUV is by far the better investment.
