My SPEC SPECulation which I posted on RB:
ragingbull.lycos.com

SpecFP results are kind of irrelevant. Only a small niche of apps can be predicted by SpecFP. SpecInt is what counts. Itanium has acceptable SpecInt scores of around 810 (not submitted yet). With help of 3MB of L3. It barely beats Athlon XP 2200 with 256K L2.

Hammer should be able to crush Itanium in SpecInt. I think the scores of ClawHammer will be 1000 to 1200 in 32 bit mode.

One thing I noticed is that they used Linux for the SPEC scores submitted. I think this is good news for AMD. It means that AMD will probably submit the scores under Linux, and under Linux, the bench can be compiled to full 64 bit mode. In 64 bit mode, Hammer will be able to take advantage of additional 8 registers, which should help immensely. In this mode, the SpecInt scores of 2 GHz Hammer can be 1200 - 1300, which means Hammer will be running away from the rest of the field. Intel will be at about 1100 with 3.2 GHz NW P4.

SledgeHammer, with 1 MB L2, if the clock speeds are in 2 GHz+ range should be at 1400 or higher. If my assumptions are correct, I think people will have to take notice.

Joe,

Yes. That argument has merit, but it still seems like the beginning of a sea-change that I don't feel good about.

Here is more detail about AMD's deal with Saifun:
