George W. Bush is more conservative than his dad but his fathers genes never went into his head. His is a grand lightweight supremo and is marching the whole world toward depression and war and at a quite nicely rapid pace for those of you who like economic and military disasters

I think that as a group today dems are more pragmatic than republicans not more mainstream. The radical right has taken over the republican party so policy is hamstrung by ideology. I don't think the radical right is a majority in the party but they are so well organized and are significant enough in numbers that no one in a leadership position in the national party can risk alienating them. Don't get me wrong there are plenty enough kooks to go around on both sides but the repubs are stuck much like the dems were in pandering to the poor before Clinton came to power. I wish the party would return to its historic principals fiscal conservatism and individual freedom. Two recent editorials in the NY Times point out problems. One was that wars fought against a common noun like terrorism can't be won but wars fought against a proper noun like bin laden can be won. Ideology leads to wars against common nouns. The other was Friedmans article about bureaucrats. They aren't necessarily bad and for the most part do a lot of good. W's ideology is totally against them and so he dismisses anything that they produce whether it be an environmental report or anything else. He thought the SEC was a waste until recent scandals pointed out clearly why it exist and why it shoud be properly staffed and funded.
