IMO this article doesn't really offer any facts, other than an interview with someone claiming he "hacked" into this web site, and offered his help. From the article you posted: "Barry Maddox, a spokesman for the FBI's Baltimore office, said Tuesday he could not discuss specifics involving Messner but that "there are a number of factors that we have to weigh prior to conducting an investigation." "The FBI doesn't encourage private citizens to take on investigative techniques, but we encourage the public to give any criminal information it may possess, especially information involving national security or terrorists," he said. "All such information is taken very seriously and is acted upon quickly." Since Messner gave up the Internet address, the Alneda Web site is back up again, this time hosted in Dayton, Ohio, and carrying a new interview with an al-Qaida field commander describing battles against American forces." (Maybe the FBI wants the Alneda Web site up and running...in Dayton, Ohio ....and I would think that maybe the FBI does track the traffic to sites such as this one?) Intelligence experts said the gamble on a fake Alneda site might not have been worthwhile. "Rather than a traditional sting operation, Messner's decoy site would be available to everyone on the Internet, said John Pike of Globalsecurity.org. That means the FBI might have inadvertently helped terrorists communicate. " My insight from this article is that the FBI *did* take seriously the information provided...but for reasons that they do not want to disclose, chose to not follow this lead. ....At least, that is their public claim...as well as their standard reply.... they do not comment on a specific investigation. Ya think they could have just called dial a geek for a great techie, there's got to be some brilliant people looking for jobs after being laid off by some of the dot bombs. IMO the FBI does have some brilliant people who work for their organization. So many of the agents IMO are overworked, underpaid....and lately unappreciated by too many Americans for the dangerous, and unending work that they do in fighting this new War on Terrorism. IMO "the rules" of war changed with 9/11....and probably no one realizes this more than the FBI, who have worked tirelessly and non-stop in trying to prevent any further attacks. I would think that the NSA would be a resource that the FBI might use....and I would trust their qualifications before a computer hacker who runs a porno site.nsa.gov IMO, I'll give the FBI the benefit of the doubt, and know that there is most likely another side to this story...maybe one that wouldn't be helpful to our national security to fully disclose.
