I agree with you... a modern 'mixed economy' with adequate checks and balances (such as anti-trust enforcement) is the best solution anyone has yet come up with.

As to Japan, I would argue that their effort to keep the equity markets propped up was equally destructive... it wasn't just their monetary policy.

Trade barriers in financial services, and the failure to privatize the postal savings institution so as the make it impossible for the government to use those funds for propping up the asset bubble, were also equally destructive.
