I guess the gist is if you can understand that they once were the standard in cooling and how they worked.

Gold, Here is a great picture of how the old style swamp coolers work....of course they do not show the pumps going out two time a year, or the cage rusting away, or the pads so full of salt that you cannot pick them up, or the belt breaking, or motor going out, water leaking off the roof because the float is stuck again...........and other stuff...LOL.
