Bush certainly can't be blamed for the budget deficit; just as during the Clinton years the surpluses had nothing to do with Clinton (and everything to do with a surging economic bubble), the projected deficit has everything to do with a slight economic pullback. I'm sure you don't agree, but presidents don't generally affect the economy, and anyone who has the slightest grasp of Economics will tell you that.Is extending the power of federal agencies, and creating huge new bureaucracies conservative? Is creating the highest level of corporate regulation conservative? I can't speak for conservatives. However, it is clear Bush is responding to the most serious crisis to face us in many, many years. I don't find him to be "creating huge new bureaucracies". I think a major reoganization is called for, and he's getting it done. Same with the corporate regulation (although, the "new" corporate regulation is minimal). It is funny how the same people who criticized Bush as being "too cozy" with corporate America are now criticizing him for doing something to stop the abuse (that was a product of eight years of total disregard for professional ethics). I think Bush has it about right. While there have been a couple of missteps, they're minor. In general, the guy has done a first rate job. Perhaps it is just because of the natural tendency to compare him with the previous administration or what we fear a Gore administration might have been, I don't know. But he is honest, focused, ignores the polls, and generally tries to do what he believes is right. That's all I ever wanted in the first place.
