Oh, I understand your broader point. I recall a very specific moment when, as a teenager, I gave some serious thought to whether I would continue to wallow in neuroses or grow up. Fortunately, I made the right choice. I agree with you that society should encourage people to pick themselves up off the floor and that, in our efforts to support victims, we've moved too far towards coddling and have produced a negative element in our culture.

It seems to me that the moral of the story is that some people have bootstraps and some people don't. If we coddle everyone, we end up with this culture of victimization. But if we tell everyone to pick themselves up, we're going to let down those who really can't. If technology could sort out who was which, that could be helpful.
