I expect AMD to make up for this with the collaborations they have set up with Infineon and UMC. I don't know whether three companies working on manufacturing development necessarily gives them an advantage over a single Intel, but I doubt that they will be much more than 6-12 months behind Intel on any given process generation. After all, Intel drives the industry towards newer manufacturing technology, because they need industry wide collaboration to enable the development of new machinery, etc. AMD and others leverage off of Intel's initiatives, and thus get a push from behind (like riding a bike behind a car - you sometimes get a benefit from the back draft).
