Dave, The sixties was a very difficult decade. The youth of America felt that the world was on the brink of destruction because of the cold war that could have set of a nuclear war. They were a bit lost in a sea of insecurity, and had no where to turn for an answer they could understand. IMO, that is the reason they rebelled against the status quo, and didn't seem to care about anything, including their own health, and lives. From what I have seen, those that did not fry their brains, became stand up citizens, with a better understanding of the "other side" of the coin.
