More support from Applied

At last week's Semicon West trade show in San Francisco, executives from Applied Materials Inc. vowed to bolster its worldwide support operations for customers. The chip-equipment giant claims it has devised an internal system to boost its support operations by 30%.

The move may be in response to a recent survey from VLSI Research Inc., which ranked tool makers in terms of their overall support operations. Applied was shut out of the rankings, as it did not make the list. But Applied claimed it did not participate in VLSI's survey in the first place.

Another 'Swift' implanter from Applied
Look for Applied to roll out a new ion implanter in the next few weeks. The new tool is expected to be a "derivative" of its Swift family of implanters. After a slow start in ion implantation, the company claims to be gaining ground in this market against its rivals.
