Can I download Opera somewhere and try it? Would it be compatible with AOL? Would it overwrite IE?

Download from here. It doesn't overwrite IE just gives you another browser as an option. Make sure you shut down as many programs as possible whenever you install new software. The more programs you have running at the time of the install the more likely you are to have a problem or conflict.

opera.com

It should operate independent of AOL. I feel your pain with AOL. I used to use it until their new version (5 at the time) wiped out both my computers. Some people love it and never have had a problem and others hate it with a passion.
