Wonder if anyone is watching?

China is watching. Very detailed article clearly stated the reasons, unbiased.

The article is too long for me to translate so you may have to rely of lazylaker, lazybrian or not so lazy babblefish.

tech.sina.com.cn

The article pointed out the benefits of backward compatibility. I was pleasantly surprised that they even understood the lack of a wcdma standard, which essentially made all these network islands indefinitely.

There is one very interesting paragraph that I will translate, about GPS:

"Take GPS for instance, KDDI subscribers only need to pay a monthly fee of 200 yen, then they can have global GPS, road and traffic inquiries and entertainment information type services. According to estimates, if they add that to auto navigation, the demand in Japan could be as much as 350 billion yen. If this estimate is correct, carriers such as KDDI can be effortlessly pulling in 35 billion yen (approx US$300M) per annun in revenue. The fact is this is like a 'lets roll the snow ball' game: the higher KDDI's subscriber base, the higher the profit to content providers, the more robust content would be created to attract more subscribers."
