What you are missing is that anticipating is different from knowing. If I knew the direction and the slope of the move I would plunge my entire buying power at once at the best possible entry. Lacking the knowledge of the future one has to average according to one's expectations. This is a trivial point, but unfortunately, it is not the first time I have to elaborate upon it.
