The new management team that took over Chiquita after it came out of Chapter 11 in March expects to release details of its long-term business plan on Sept. 24 after completing a top-to-bottom review. Those plans will include building up the Cincinnati company's banana sales in Europe and Asia and increasing the profit of its canned-vegetable operation before deciding whether to stay in that business, said Cyrus F. Freidheim Jr., chairman and chief executive officer. No decision has been made on whether to sell the canned-vegetable division, but it would have to generate more profit before it could be sold, Freidheim told reporters after the shareholders' meeting. Following the lead of other companies, Chiquita plans in 2003 to begin accounting for executives' stock options as expenses because they should be considered part of executive compensation, Freidheim said. Under U.S. pressure, the European Union agreed last year to allow increased banana exports into Europe, which has revitalized Chiquita. The company said it lost millions for years because of the restrictions on European banana imports. Chiquita's sales totaled $2.2 billion last year, roughly the same as the prior two years. ``We have a fresh start,'' Freidheim told shareholders at the company's annual meeting. Heather Jones, an analyst who follows Chiquita for BB&T Capital Markets, agreed that Chiquita has the potential to increase its banana sales in Europe and Asia.siliconinvestor.com
