Thanks for the information.. Actually I did forget to ask questions re. the hard drive but both the Drives are Maxtor 7200 rpm ATA 133.. Last I had looked at them at another dealer, they had under 9 sec seek time (both were fast enough) or some such number but I do realize there are many models..

As for all these gigabytes to play with, you are right.. I think I got carried away.. Never going to fill it up.. Originally I just picked one 80GB HD and then two HD each 40GB for backup and insurance and then the current config. because I thought 50 bucks extra will bump up the 40 to 80 so what the hell..

All of this for some one who is currently using 200mmx, 64mb ram and 3 GB of HD, with a hobbled Win95.. and that set up with a 17 Viewsonic 17PS cost me about 95% more five years ago.. Unbelievable..

Checking a bit further, drives are Maxtor DX740-6L 7200 RPM ATA133 with 2MB Buffer and if I remember, identical seek time of 8. something..

Only question in my mind is how reliable and quiet are these drives.. The guy did suggest Seagate Barracuda IV with fluid bearing ATA100 drives.. 7200 RPM with 2mb buffer but a tad slower in seek time but apparently quieter.. identical prices but some reason I ended up choosing Maxtor..

Have till Tuesday a.m. to change my mind..

PM,

Just had two computers die on me today and am looking for a hard drive backup system that is not physically connected to the computer i.e., not a second hard drive on the same computer.

Computer #1: Windows 2000. Computer starts up and goes almost through its initialization but freezes just before the icons appear on the desktop.

Computer #2: Windows 98SE. I was installing Norton SystemWorks when I suddenly smelled something burning. A quick pulling out of the power cord and then a restart gave me a "disk boot failure." I do have drive image installed on this computer but don't know how to access it on the d: drive now.

Is there a portable hard drive that's on the market which will allow me to back up my ENTIRE hard drive just in case I have the above mentioned problems? Maybe a backup system with tapes that I can then store or just a large backup system where I can backup several computers on the same drive. I'm looking for a device that I can plug into the back of the computer on a monthly basis for those critical backups.

Thanks!

Sue
