If what we want is excellence

If there were only one school and the kids that didn't get into that one spent the rest of their lives flipping burgers, I can understand your drive to get the very, very best. But there are lots of schools, enough for each excellent kid to find a place. It doesn't have to be that particular place. Nor does the school need to catch all the most excellent kids to be a successful, even great school.

I take your point about different departments seeking different strengths, but how many kids settle on a major before matriculation? It seems to me that you just want a good bunch of students and they will sort themselves out by department in a year or two.
