Perhaps while you were feeling smug in your cubicle, muttering about gold stocks, the other people in the office, besides doing their jobs instead of muttering about any stocks, realized that since they've been putting 6% of their pay into the 401k for many years and getting another 3% or so in employer match month after month after month, they didn't "buy the nasdaq at the top", have a mix of funds in their accounts, aren't down 60% and are still better off than those who sat around muttering about gold stocks.

Most people don't try to time the market and most don't have a broker they can or would call for an opinion on gold stocks. They just put away a little more each month and leave it alone. The only time they think about "the market", besides when they do their weekly grocery shopping, is when all the news shows tell them they should be afraid - really afraid.
