Tom,

Re: The U.S. did not support Stalin.

My uncle worked in the merchant marines in WW II carrying "Lend-Lease" equipment and foodstuffs from New York to Murmansk. We did indeed support the USSR during WW II. To the extent that we prevented the collapse of the Soviet Union, which would have sealed Britain's fate. We did not support them to the extent that we might have, if the goal was a quick end to war, reduction of bloodshed and peace. Our goal was more cynical, the "correct" re-ordering of the post-war world to accommodate the imperial goals of the U.S. and UK governments to the greatest extent possible.

re:"The U.S. did not support Stalin."

O.K. the United States gave considerable support to the Soviet Union during the Second World War (which was controlled by its Dictator- Stalin).

re:"You are asking why we supported Saddam in his aggression against Iran, but fought against Hitler in his aggression?"

The U.S.'s desire in the Iran Iraq war, was that neither side win - a stalemate. To that end, the U.S. sold a small amount of military equipment to Iran, when Iran was on the defensive (remember Iran/Contra?). Then United States gave Iraq primarily intelligence data when Iraq was losing and fighting a defensive war.
