Brian, this preferential SEC treatment of Buffett's filings flies in the face of current full disclosure efforts. I hope some BRK shareholders file suit to get those files unsealed.

1)Why would Buffett ask to seal quarterly filings?

He doesn't want others to piggyback his trading strategies since that would influence the prices at which he buys and sells. BTW, he's being doing this for a long time.

2)Why would the SEC ever grant this request?

By law, 13F filers can request confidentiality on some or all of their holdings. Berkshire and others used to have their requests routinely approved until the last year or so.
