Their thoughts may not be reasonable, but they are responsible to society (imo) for the unreasonable nature of their thoughts. If I kill you, because i thought you were a mosquito, I should be responsible for that. I should be treated humanely (imo) but you are as dead as if I killed you in a premeditated manner. I don't care whether you kill me because of your childhood, which made you into a demented killer of people, or whether you wanted the money, or whether you thought I was an insect- you are responsible for my death, regardless of any unreasonable apprehension or intention on your part.

I do not want society to have to measure delusions in other people's heads. That sets up a system to favor the delusional, or those who can fake delusion. I do not think that is in our interest. JMO
