Let's see: there are many more democratic or semi-democratic regimes now than in 1980. There has not been a general European or world- wide war since 1945, nor did the Soviet/American confrontation ever break- out into direct hostilities. Trade has increasingly liberalized under American leadership, and the WTO is providing a framework for refereeing trade disputes under agreed upon rules. More countries are capitalist or semi- capitalist, including China, India, and most countries of the former Soviet bloc, than in 1980. Seems to me we have been doing something right.
