Because I don't think people have all that much control over their lives, really. You're dealt a hand- and some people get really crappy ones. I feel sorry for them. Even if they really believe in responsibility, if they don't have a good hand, they aren't going to win the game.

You and I Karen, we have winning hands. I don't think it is fair to look down too much on people who don't, and who want to look for reasons why they don't. If they'd rather blame someone else than realize they got crummy genes, or were raised in such a way that they will never fulfill whatever potential they might have had, do I want to take the joy they may get out of blaming someone else away from them? I might disagree with them about it, but I'd be sympathetic as well, unless their blame was virulent and destructive in some way, and presented clear and present harm (as I define it, of course, you might define harm more or less generally than I do, and you would probably define it differently- I recognize that).
