that's a very good way to put it.

it figures they'd ramp it this much considering there's no news to bring anyone back to reality.

Today's rally is because of CSCO numbers after the bell, I remember back in May when CSCO launched the market much higher. It is better to take any short profits off the table then risk them if CSCO like usual meets or beats expectations. You can always short later but it is better to take profits after such a big downturn.
