Possible, but maybe the Japanese don't have pension or social security to perhaps rely on? Maybe they HAVE to save more. I am sure they are also more frugal and smarter about it than we "live for today" Americans.

Also, their cost of living is ridiculously high. If they get laid off they can't move into a cheap apartment or live off cheap tuna helper, becasue nothing is CHEAP! Food can be 2x to 5x the price over there. They can't even go camping cheap because gas is so high and campgrounds are limited and expensive. Heck, they can't afford a car.
