The men and money for al Qaeda started in Afghanistan, and the operation of the "moral equivalent of our Founding Fathers" was organized by people a little closer to home. The Saudis were no doubt happy to supply matching funds, their hatred of godless communists being conveniently aligned with local sentiment at the time. The Orwellian neocon Eurasia/Eastasia line on who, currently, are our friends and enemies on the Russia / SA front is entertaining enough, but old Pootie Poot is, actually, a former KGB chief.
