Scott, it's quite a dilema - defend the economy or defend the dollar.

The people making the calls are politicians who are swayed by public opinion. Everybody reads about the economy every day, but it seems few folks outside of gold bugs pay much attention to the dollar.

My vote is the economy is defended and the dollar allowed to weaken - with much arm waving to the contrary. Kind of like our Fed's tough talk on inflation as it does everything it can to pump up the money supply.

The weakening dollar will eventually cut down on the current account deficit, which in time will boost domestic production. It may be painful in the meantime as all our imported goodies go up in price, and it will really hurt foreign exporters.

That's my take on the situation.
