A righteous Jew???

YellowTimes.org - 25th April 2002:

Just Get Out!

By Gabriel Ash

How many Palestinians are dead in Jenin? Dozens? Hundreds? How many hundreds? If the number turns out to be exactly 641, or exactly 139, will that be a PR "victory" for the Palestinians, or for the Israelis? As journalists are lining up to declare the "victor", CNN runs a web poll about each side's credibility. Soon we may see the dead jostling with the living in CNN's sordidly named "crossfire."

As a mental exercise, let each of us decide at exactly how many deaths the scale tips from the Israeli side to the Palestinian side, at what point an incursion becomes a slaughter, at what point a slaughter becomes a massacre, at what point a massacre becomes a genocide.

This is all very important, PR-wise.

For eleven days, IDF soldiers have been preventing journalists, medics, rescue teams and aid convoys from entering Jenin.

This is how they "protect" the truth inside from all those outside who might want to "misuse" it against Israel.

After all, the truth is such a terrible weapon. It would be wrong to allow one side to have more of it than the other. There must be balance. But only regarding the truth. There need not be balance in firepower, for example. It is O.K. that Israel has nuclear weapons and Apache helicopters, paid for by American taxpayers who can't afford to pay for adequate health care, while Palestinians fight with rifles and home-made explosives.

There need not be balance about land either. It is O.K. that Israelis control all the land and Palestinians none.

Nor is balance a requirement regarding liberty, or human rights, which Israelis enjoy and Palestinians do not. But there must be balance in describing what happened in Jenin.

That is why accuracy is very important in Jenin. Was it exactly a "massacre," as Perez called it and then denied, or a "devastation," or just an "incursion" that used "minimal force" to achieve "necessary goals," such as showing Palestinians who's the boss and what you get for upsetting him? If you use too strong a word, if you match the expression to the stench of the decomposing bodies, Israel will reprimand you, brand you an anti-Semite, maybe even expel you. Be forewarned.

But what can one do? Even the cautious and pro-Israeli 'The Economist' saw clear evidence of war crimes. U.N. envoy Terje Roed-Larsen described the devastation in Jenin as "horrific beyond belief", and said it was "morally repugnant" that Israel blocked humanitarian emergency workers from entering Jenin for 11 days. Israel is still blocking rescue teams, while Perez is pondering whether to send Roed-Larsen home with a note to his parents or merely revoke his weekly allowance. The undiplomatic words of the Norwegian diplomat, but not the undiplomatic reality these words refer to, really hurt Israel's highly evolved moral sensibility.

Having agreed to it earlier, the government of Israel is now blocking the UN fact-finding mission to Jenin. The problem, according to Israel, is that too many of the members have "humanitarian" experience, and might not understand the requirements of warfare. It is easy to imagine the people and the resumes Israel would want to see instead:

Maybe a few Latin American death-squad leaders; or Lt. William Calley, whose experience at Mai Lai could prove invaluable in determining what is and what isn't a massacre; or perhaps the French General Paul Aussaresses, commander of the 1957 French paratroopers' attack on the Casbah of Algiers. To top it all, war crimes connoisseur Madeleine Albright, or even Henri Kissinger, could provide moral leadership, as well as much needed verbal elasticity.

As long as there is balance.

For the Israeli public and politicians, the widespread, and very unbalanced, opprobrium is just one more affirmation that the "whole world is against us".

Echoing popular sentiment, Israel's President Moshe Katsav whines:

"With all due respect and esteem for people of conscience and the bleeding-heart liberals of the world, I don't understand why they've clamped their mouths shut for a year and a half while the cruelest of unprecedented terrorist acts were committed against Israelis citizens everywhere."

President Katsav, are all the inhabitants of Jenin terrorists? Are most? Is God's own standard, of requiring only ten righteous men to save a city, too lax for you? What part of "collective punishment is a war crime" don't you understand?

The fact that the eruption of violence during the last eighteen months baffles you so much makes me wonder, President Katsav. Do you understand the idea of liberty? Have you ever read the universal declaration of human rights?

Do you understand that "universal" means "applies to everybody equally"?

Does the declination of possessive pronouns confuse you? Surely you are at ease with "mine" and "ours"? But do you also understand the concepts behind "yours", "his", "hers", and "theirs"? When I look at the map of the land grab for your illegal settlements, I have serious doubts.

Are you troubled why "people of conscience" do not condemn terrorism? Even to make such an accusation you must be living in an alternate universe. But I will answer your whining twice nevertheless.

The long answer, President Katsav, "with all due respect and esteem", is that the suicide bombers did not land in Israel from outer space. The explosive belts might as well carry a label that reads "made in the Greater Eretz Israel".

The suicide bombs are the mutant flowers of Israel's brutalizing occupation, springing from the seeds of the 54-year-long dehumanization of Palestinians. They are the ghosts of your brutality coming back to haunt you, the mementos of your war against memory.

The massive and deliberate destruction of Palestinian civil records in the West Bank in the last weeks is but the most recent chapter in a war against Palestinian memory that began in 1948, with the annihilation of 400 Palestinian villages. But you seem to learn nothing from history, indeed from your own history: ghosts always return, each time more violently.

For those ready to die, their spiritless hatred towards you is what remains after you have bulldozed their past and their future. Whether you like it or not, they are your bastard offspring. Everything they know about hate, you taught them. Everything they forgot about humanity, you made them forget. Give them a hug now, as they have proven themselves worthy of their parents - you.

The short answer, President Katsav, is really short: just get out!

Call the army home. Call the occupation off. And get out of the Occupied Territories. Just get out!

Don't mumble about how "difficult" or "complex" the situation is. It isn't. You are the oppressor. You are the occupier. You park your tanks on plundered land. You fill your swimming pools with stolen water. You kill and destroy in order to inherit. So don't bullshit about "the situation." Just get out!

Stop abusing people. Stop abusing language. Stop spinning your own moral cocoon. Stop turning your country and your people into a metaphor of evil. Just get out!

Don't wait for Bush. Don't wait for Arafat. Don't wait to negotiate with the mythical Palestinian leader who will finally accept your dominion. There is nothing to negotiate about. Just get out!

Take your rabid Jewish fundamentalists from Kiriat Arba and Beit El with you. Load them on buses and pump the gas pedal until the hills of the West Bank vanish in the rear mirror. Just get out!

Gather your thugs from the borderless "border police," give them scholarships and send them to school again. Let them discover there is more to life than beating people to a pulp. Just get out!

Take your checkpoints, with all their petty humiliations and deadly snipers, with you. And just get out!

Send the Shin-Bet packing. After 35 years, the world had enough of your clever jailers and torturers. Take them with you and just get out!

Let your hideous bulldozers loose on the illegal settlements of Ma'ale Edomim, Har Homa and Gilo. There is plenty of demolition work for them there. Let them continue until the mountain line bears no more memory of your rape. Then just get out!

Don't apologize. Don't justify. Don't explain. There is nothing left to explain. Honestly. Just get out!

Don't even worry about the thousands of olive trees, symbols of peace, you uprooted. Someone will plant them again.

Just get out!

What billions of our tax dollars support in Israel:

The Wit and Wisdom of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

(Spiritual leader of the Shas Party, part of Israel's government coalition and supported by American taxpayers)

The Times - Friday 29 June 2001

Rabbi Tells of Conversation with Messiah

From Sam Kiley in Jerusalem

ISRAEL'S ultra--Orthodox Sephardi community was engulfed in a wave of religious optimism after Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of the Shas party, said that he had conversed with the Messiah in a dream.

Rabbi Yosef, the former Sephardi Chief Rabbi, who recedntly said that Arabs were snakes and should be annihilated, told his followers that he had a dream on Friday.

Rabbi Ben-Zion Mutzafi, one of his followers, said that Rabbi Yosef had told him that in his dream "at the Western Wall plaza and in all of Jerusalem there were only Jews ... There were no non-Jewish foreigners there. They had already been expelled [before the coming of the Messiah]".

The Saviour was said to have exhorted Jewish children to study the Torah, the Jewish Bible. He had told Iraqi-born Rabbi Yosef: "Anyone who is for God should come to me, so that there will be teachers to teach them Torah. Not one school will remain without Torah. Everyone will study Torah."

The rabbi's party, Shas, holds 17 of the 120 seats in the Knesset and has a wide following among the working class and the ultra-Orthodox. Under Ehud Barak it held the balance of power in parliament and extracted huge subsidies for its religious schools. Its former political leader, Arieh Deri, is serving six years in jail for fraud.

These mundane dramas have done nothing to dampen enthusiasm for Rabbi Yosef's "vision". Eliyahu Shai, the Shas chairman and Internal Affairs Minister, said yesterday: "Every Jew who is waiting for the Messiah sees in the dream ... significant tidings in anticipation of salvation".

Rabbi Mutzafi said: "Until now we have not heard of anyone who saw the Messiah in a dream. These things are evidence that salvation is nigh".

RABBI OVADIA YOSEF INTERPRETS BOWEL MOVEMENTS AS MESSIANIC SIGN

by James Conant

One day after publicly announcing a messianic dream, Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef has sent additional messianic shockwaves through the ultra-Orthodox community in Israel and the United States ... The Shas spiritual leader claims he can now forecast the arrival of the Messiah according to the frequency and veracity of his bowel movements.

The Rabbi told personal confidants of his latest mystical experience. Yosef later confirmed rumors of this latest interpretation on Shas radio. 'Solid stools indicated the strength of Ariel Sharon's policies, but lately, the stools have had a softer text, indicating Sharon's weakness and the possible arrival of the Messiah in this time of crisis,' Rabbi Ovadia Yosef told his listeners."

Israeli rabbi calls on God to annihilate Arabs

From Sam Kiley in Jerusalem

THE spiritual leader of Israel's ultra-Orthodox Shas party has come under attack for a Passover sermon in which he called on God to annihilate Arabs.

"It is forbidden to be merciful to them, you must give them missiles, with relish - annihilate them. Evil ones, damnable ones," Ovadia Yosef was quoted in the Hebrew Maariv newspaper as telling a congregation attending prayers last weekend.

His party, which holds the balance of power in Israel's Knesset and is a key member of Ariel Sharon's national unity coalition, moved quickly to clarify his remarks, which included a plea to God to destroy Arabs.

Yitzhak Sudri, the party spokesman, insisted that the rabbi was referring only to "Arab murderers and terrorists", but Rabbi Yosef's comments revived memories of his recent description of Arabs as "snakes" amid complaints that the Palestinian Authority was tolerating incitement, which both sides agreed to ban under the 1993 Oslo Peace Accord.

"May the Holy Name visit retribution on the Arabs' heads, and cause their seed to be lost, and annihilate them, and cause them to be cast from the world," Rabbi Yosef, a former Chief Rabbi of Israel's Sephardi Jews, is reported to have said.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- A leading ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Israel has ruled that it is permitted to pick your nose on the Jewish Sabbath, his aide said Sunday.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef delivered the ruling Saturday night in a sermon relayed by satellite to his followers in Israel and abroad.

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot had reported that Yosef had said nose-picking is forbidden because tiny hairs inside the nostrils might also be pulled out. But a viewing of a videotape of the event confirmed that Yosef had in fact ruled it was permitted.

Yosef is among a select group of rabbis who respond to questions from Jews -- serious or otherwise -- on the minutiae of applying Jewish law to daily life.

The Iraqi-born Yosef, a former chief rabbi in Egypt and Israel and a leading authority on Jewish law, is spiritual leader of the religious political party Shas, which has 10 seats in Israel's Parliament.

"... The Halakhic instrument promoted by ultra-Orthodox rabbis, both in Israel and the U.S., that ultimately convinced Yigal Amir that he should kill Yitzhak Rabin was the ancient Jewish doctrine of zealotry. The doctrine maintains that under the most extreme circumstances, a God-loving Jew can kill another person without asking permission.

"The doctrine of zealotry goes back to the first biblical Jewish zealot-Pinchas Ben-Eleazar. As told in the Bible, Pinchas, acting in awe of God, killed Zimri, who had prostituted in public with a Midianite girl. Pinchas's problem was that the killing was totally unauthorized and he acted out of an uncontrollable momentary drive. And yet, in spite of the severity of the act, which was denounced, according to the Talmud, by the people's elders, it was forgiven by God. The reason given was that Pinchas "was zealous for my sake among them." God instantly terminated a plague that had already killed 20,000 Jews.

Pinchas' entire line of ancestors were made priests of Israel. The prophet Elijah is also described in the Bible as a zealot who killed in his wrath 400 priests of Baal, a Canaanite god. Yigal Amir convinced himself that in killing Rabin he was acting in the best tradition of Jewish zealotry.

"For the ultra-Orthodox, both in Israel and the U.S., a form of "messianic Zionism," which makes control over the biblical Land of Israel a religious mandate, has been growing. In his book, 'Terror in the Mind of God: the Global Rise of Religious Violence' , Professor Mark Juergensmayer notes that Jewish activists "have been convinced that their violent acts have been authorized as weapons in a divine warfare sanctioned by God. Dr. Baruch Goldstein's massacre at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron in 1994 was described as a military act. One of his supporters explained, 'It goes back to biblical times,' indicating that the present-day Arabs are simply the modern descendants of the enemies of Israel described in the Bible for whom God has unleashed wars of revenge

Israel as the small-scale reflection of Europe....

Analysis: The European Arab view

Gustave Jaeger
Aug. 7, 2010

The question of the nullification of citizenship of European Arabs who have engaged in or aided terrorist activities against citizens of the EU is only one new element in the complex issue of the pseudocitizenship and status of European Arabs, almost 20 percent of the population.

Historically, the European Union was enforced on its Arab immigrants. It is a Judeofascist combine whose agenda and objectives are determined by the Judeo-Christian majority. Its flag is the Magen Goliath and its anthem is "Deep in the heart, a crusader stirs."

The Union is not exactly the embodiment of the political aspirations of its Arab citizens, and its existence and achievements are the most practical expression of the failure of the Muslim neighbors' attempts to join it (Turkey, Morocco, Albania,...).

European Arabs are linked by national, religious, and frequently family ties to a region hostile to Europe and waging a demographic war against it for 540 years.

Since its establishment, the EU has regarded them as a security risk, and this is one of the reasons they (except Christian Arabs, Lebanese Maronites, etc) are not obligated to serve in the EU Expeditionary Force. They live on the social, economic, public, and political fringe of the Union, both because the government did not wish to bring them closer and because they themselves did not wholeheartedly want to be part of it.

Psychologically, they are always placed in a dilemma between their legal obligation to observe the law and the moral injunction that obligates them to identify themselves with their Muslim brothers and with the Arab world. They are required to display loyalty to both warring sides simultaneously, far from a simple task.

One of the expressions of this is the Palestinization of the Arab ghettoes, the increased feeling of belonging nationally, culturally, and religiously to the Palestinian people, and identification with the Palestinian nation in the Palestinian Authority territories and in the diaspora, mainly in the refugee camps in the Mideast, the Balkans, and Afghanistan.

The feeling of pan-Islamic identification has increased since the US war against terrorism, to the extent that most of them now define themselves as "Palestinian citizens of the EU." This crisis of identity reached its peak in October 2001, when scores of Arab immigrants were arrested and brutalized by police during demonstrations, ethnic riots, and blocking of major roads.

During the last two years, tension has increased. The war against terrorism, the depressed state of the economy (that has also affected the Judeo-Christian majority), the mutual suspicion, and the severing of relations between native Europeans and Arabs have created a feeling that "my country is fighting against my nation and is also hostile to me."

The Arab media mainly the satellite channels, led by al-Jazeera abound in very serious anti-EU propaganda, frequently based on disinformation and horror photos.

All these create a difficult atmosphere against the Union, its police, and its institutions, and help to legitimize aiding terrorists. Next month is the anniversary of the suicide bombing (the only one so far) perpetrated by a Muslim European, but there have been four cases of European Arabs perpetrating terrorist attacks against Jewish civilians and synagogues.

In such circumstances, the nullification of the citizenship of European Arabs involved in terrorist activities is regarded as proof the EU does not want them here --any of them. Interior Commissioner Eli Yishai's step adds to the fears of increasing legitimacy of the voices calling for transfer of the Arabs or, at least, for redefining the polity of the Union so that part of the Arab population will be repatriated to Arab countries when it is established. They see the graffiti on the roadsides: "No Arabs no terrorist attacks" and posters declaring: "Transfer = Peace + Security + Full employment."

They hear more and more voices calling them "Bin Laden's agents," "collaborators with Al Qaeda," "fifth columnists," and "a demographic danger threatening the European Union," and they feel the ground trembling under their feet. The scenario of expulsion as happened to half of them in 2003 seems to them to be more and more realistic.

The Interior Directorate-General can constantly proclaim that nullification of citizenship is only enforced against those involved in terrorist activities, but the Arab man in the street sees this as another nail in the coffin that both Judeo-Christian and Muslim citizens are preparing for their mutual relationship.
