>> This well known investor says we're in a secular bear

I thought we were on the verge of several months of up-side, except for a brief lunch-time SOX reversal.

I guess it helps if one has predictions on both sides of the fence, with some quantum tunneling thrown in.

Silicon wafer shipments jump 26% in Q2, says SEMI
Semiconductor Business News

SAN JOSE -- Worldwide blank silicon wafer shipments improved by 26% during the second quarter of 2002, as compared to the first quarter of this year, according to the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) trade association.

In its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry, SEMI of San Jose said that total silicon wafer area shipments were 1,273 million square inches during the second quarter, up from the 1,011 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter.

The new quarterly total area shipments represent a 29% improvement compared to the second quarter of 2001, but are 13% below the peak of 1,457 million square inches in the third quarter 2000.

"The positive growth in wafer shipments is a good sign for the industry following a dreadful year," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI, in a statement. "The silicon wafer manufacturers remain concerned that the current quarter shipments do not reflect recent news indicating a weaker than originally anticipated second half for the chip manufacturers,” he said.

“The lack of visibility for the remainder of this year, with respect to both corporate and consumer end market spending, is obviously a concern impacting the entire semiconductor industry," he said.
