Tiger already knew how to play golf when he arrived at Stanford, I think. He was the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion. He learned to play on military and public courses his Dad had access to when he was a kid. His philosophy has always been to gain entry with his skill and then, through his exemplary behavior, break down the prejudices that lead the ignorant to erect racial and ethnic barriers. Doesn't always work, but I have a lot of respect for that approach. Lots of private clubs have loosened their restrictions since he came along.
