My guess is the Europeans, contrary to much of the posting on SI, are more awake than the US. After all, they've been living with various forms of terrorism for many years. This is incontestable, as their borders alone make our dealing with the Mexican border look like a piece of cake in comparison. When you're there, you are clearly aware of how parts of the world that the average person in the US knows little about are a stones throw away, or just across the Mediterranean. Not to mention stuff within countries, like Corsica with respect to France, and the Basque ETA.
