Stan, having seen them from both the buy and sell side of the investment biz, I think they are more ignorant than anything else. However, greed plays a part in their ignorance. So, the truth is, they often know a lot about the companies and the industries they follow. However, since they are an inbred lot, they have no idea how those same cos. and industries stack up relative to other cos. in other industries. Also, you just don't get paid much if your industry isn't front and center on the firm morning calls. On these calls, you can hear everyone hold their breath while the chip analyst speaks and then you hear them exiting when the textile analyst hits the dais. The chip guy is a star and gets star pay. Should he dump on his industry and start making cameo appearances in the investment equivalent of dinner theater? He probably should but he will resist that. He becomes a cheerleader for his industry and loses all perspective.
