That seems nuts.

I have never stressed penmanship, unless the child's writing is illegible. And with illegible writing there is usually an organic reason. Children learn to write legibly if it is modeled for them, because they have a great desire to communicate- just as they have desire to improve their art. Even first graders have trouble with the muscle control necessary for finely shaped letters. I do not understand pushing children past the point of what is developmentally comfortable, nor do I see why we should make parents nervous wrecks.
