I'm sure a President could leave his party while in office if he wanted to. I believe Governors have done it.

Traficant was a Democrat, but he voted for Hastert for Speaker.

It's the same thing.

And if you consider the people of Vermont, whose only congressman is Bernie Sanders a self proclaimed Socialist (who won with 70% of the vote), it's not hard to imagine that Jeffords (who won with 66% of the vote) was in fact representing his constituents best by leaving the Republican party and voting for Dashle as Senate majority leader. Afterall Gore won Vermont by 10%.

His move was really only controversial outside of Vermont, but he's Vermont's Senator.
