Abercrombie July same-store fall 3 pct, but UP's guidance

NEW ALBANY, Ohio, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Youth-oriented apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE:ANF - News) on Thursday said sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, fell 3 percent. ADVERTISEMENT

But the company said it expects earnings in the second quarter to beat the average analyst estimate of 26 cents, as sales were better than expected and were helped by inventory and cost control.

New Albany, Ohio-based Abercrombie said net sales in the four-week period ended Aug. 3 rose 18 percent, to $126.2 million.

On Wednesday, rival American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NasdaqNM:AEOS - News) posted a same-store sales decline of 4.6 percent. Abercrombie and American Eagle have similar merchandise that appeals to teens and college age shoppers.

The company also said its board of directors has approved the repurchase of an additional 5 million shares of its stock.
