In my previous house, I used a very large linen closet to hold the bulk of my books, and even then, had them on their sides instead of standing up. I kept intending it to be a temporary measure, and to buy the shelf space to hold it all, but never could decide how to arrange the prospective shelves, past a couple of bookcases.
