This seems counter-intuitive, but then appears to make sense when you explain it - 'Don't expect rich gold when you are near source.' .... i'm following this placer discussion as much as possible, kind of get lost and confused in the chemical reaction parts, yet i stumble on, it's interesting

Chuca and Bill/WA - welcome to Winter ... dog days of august, this is the place to be, eh

In re la Demokratia - there was a guy named Lenny on the radio going on about that, at length yet by some standards rhythmically, he sounded like he expected it to arrive in the Yew Ess Eh even, at some point, didn't sound like he was holding his breath waiting though ... 'spiritual thirst bla bla bla', i think what he really wanted was a cold physical brewski and a babe to dance with

csl.v - what if you could hoover up saleable construction sand and gravel by the millions of yards from some crick, and get a bit of placer gold as gravy? - #reply-17850263 ..... [but then yeah, i hear ya, 'it's in frikin Venezuela']

[edit] - Leftcoaster, you catch the Seabulk-Sechelt reference in that link? ... ralfph? ... anybody got amusing and/or educational anecdotes about them? .... i was about to type one in earlier, then realised, oh shit, that was 'Seaspan', lol

EC,

Back in Whitehorse after 1 1/2 weeks in the Dawson City area. I'm really getting into this rock thingy. <G>
On the way up the Klondike Hwy, pulled down a dirt trail called Plume Creek Agate Road, supposed to be plume agates and geodes in the stream. Took the ATV down the river bank but my idea of agates where those colorful shiny stones and it wasn't until I was leaving and met a couple walking up the trail, showed me some they'd found, that I really understood what to look for. As for the geodes, how the heck do you know if you have one unless you can cut the damned thing in half??

Stopped at the Tintina Trench oversite, very interesting, runs from the Artic to the lower 48. South of Prince George it's called the Rockey Mt. Trench - the plate tectonics thingy.

Took a lot of video on the Top of the World Hwy, one of my favorites (goes above treeline). You can tell there was some serious pushing and shoving going on here years ago - mountains and hills are steep and the valleys low. Camped out on the old Clinton Rd (about 30 miles off the TotW Hwy. Took the ATV up to the abandoned Clinton Asbestos Mine site. The asbestos was veined in green rock (actual asbestos fibers). Never knew it was like that. They spent some serious money on that place. I'll post some of the pictures on the web site this winter, you'll probably get a kick out of them.

Stopped at a rock slide about 40 miles south of Dawson and thought I'd hit it lucky. Black rock with veins of shiny gold in them (it was raining). Kept a few of the big rocks (about softball size) but when they dried out, that shiny gold turned a muddy yellow :-(

I did find a baseball size piece of quartz with a little god in it, but don't remember where I found it.

Going to head back up the Klondike Hwy, probably Wed., to that agate trail, then back to Whitehorse, Haines, Whitehorse, Atlin, and then back down the Cassiar, hopefully with the leaves turning.

By the way, I did take your advice and got two books - Gem Trails of BC, by Cam Bacon, and Gemstones and Mineral Sites of BC, by Rick Hudson (A Days Drive from Vancouver). Going to see if I can find some gemstones. My oldest daughter is a wholesale diamond dealer - maybe I can fill some of her empty settings. <G>
