He could not bring himself to explain to a grieving mother or wife why their loved one had been lost in a war in which he has overextended his mandate. Apparently his son has not inherited such scruples from his father.

It isn't a matter of scruples; both the Bush presidents appear to have exceptional "scruples" compared with some other recent residents of 1600 Pennsylvania.

More to the point, however, you're taking the remarks out of context. When Bush (Sr) made these remarks he was referring to his decision process 10 years ago. He concluded the remarks with a statement to the effect of "hindsight is 20/20". Bush (Sr) in that interview was clear that times had changed and the circumstances today are in no way comparable with those of ten years ago.

It is just a different time and place, and frankly, it is politically efficient to suggest that Bush 41 made a mistake. But those who were paying attention at the time understand that going to Baghdad wasn't viable in any sense.
