Thanks for the realistic warning about the hurdles CSL still have to overcome. Regarding the environmental issues, one thing in CSL's favour is that they've got Veiga involved, who seems to be a respected academic and an expert on the whole mercury-pollution / garimpeiro issue -- including the socio-economic aspects of it. I also understand that CSL will have access to research facilities at UBC and through the La Salle Foundation -- graduate students, etc. -- so they may be able to do what's necessary to prove the environmental benefits of the project on the cheap.
