Steve:

It was a little toung in cheek with soros BUT I don't completely agree with your statement.

MSFT has been able to generate the cash due to its Windows PC system operating system. While the price of the average PC has dropped considerably over the past 4 years Windows has stayed the same. Even the Office Suite, now in 90% of business, is a monopoly although this has dropped in price.

This isn't going away.

IF the x box is successful then MSFT has opened up a whole new revenue stream.

I see them taking over from palm in the handhelds.

I see them making inroads with voice recognition. 2 or 3 more versions and it should be successful.

This locks in the hand held, cell phone and tablets (hey someday the desktop goes away) and enhances the desktop.

They with INTC are making inroads against SUNW, HWP and IBM in the enterprise (granted low end).

I don't rule out MSFT until the next generationion (after Gates & Balmer) take charge.

I think we are about to see a sea change in options. At the least we will see a major scaling back of the # of options being issued. On the flip side one does not have to increase salaries. I know many old line companies that don't give options and pay competitive salaries. MSFT salaries are competitive today even without the options.

I do agree in reality the best and brightest will leave to take the risk / reward of a company issuing options but in this environment just having a job is a plus, so many good employees stay. Quite unlike just 2 short years ago when employers were going begging for employees. This shake out still has some room to run.

As for the dead wood good companies weed out the less productive. GE has a great program for this.

Hey I'm still trying to figure what the next sea change will be. We do need something to over come the power needs.

1) You have to fill the void with increased salaries, which eat into the profits - hence you don't generate cash at this level any more

or

2) Employees leave and some of those that remain are less productive, which eat into revenues - hence you don't generate cash at this level any more

Or 3) move all the jobs to India.
