Excellent post TB.. Excellent post!!

We have nothing to gain by permitting Saddam to remain in power, and much to lose.

Of course, others make the same argument for permitting to remain in power.

But that was all before 9/11, when 19 men hijacked aircraft and sacrificed their lives for an idea they believed in (no matter how horrid we might perceive their motivation and actions).

And before we were introduced to the nearly daily occurence of youths strapping on explosives and wading into crowded restaurants, dance clubs, shopping malls, and universities to kill and maim innocents.

There is NOTHING redeeming about Saddam. But the fact that our supposed "allies" are showing such lack of support for his removal suggests that he HAS become a greater threat than in 1990, as well as a compelling indictment of US policies in the region over the past 10 years (especially with the Kurds).

What I know about the Saudis and lots of other Gulfies, for example, leads me to believe that they would indeed like to see Saddam gone, but they have little confidence in our willingness to do the job properly and thus are unwilling to get out in front on the issue, especially in public, for fear of being stuck with the consequences should we not, in fact, go forward

...implying that they will be totally against us until the day we go in, when we will suddenly acquire lots of new best buddies.
