Since when has Saddam embraced any kind of "true Islamic model"?

Win, I said the Islamists, not Saddam. Saddam is just trying to take advantage of the movement -- for instance, by paying $25,000 to the families of suicide bombers, suddenly advertising his piety, etc. -- because it is a flourishing and attrative movement in the Islamic world. Saddam may have been Mr. Secular against Ayatollah Khomeini, but against the Great Satan it's another matter. No leader who is vying for hegemony over the Arab world can afford to let someone else claim the mantle of the restored caliphate without contesting it.
