Why are GPRS operators in Europe relying so heavily on future MMS prospects in the form of low resolution pictures sent on the fly? Few, if indeed any, other consumer services are noted in carrier projections. GPS services appear to be simmering on a very back burner - and there are certainly no prospects for real-time updated maps and associated navigation, location and security services.

If you look under the bed, the answer is grinning back at you.

The service of transmitting photos - as marketed - is not time sensitive.

Real-time services - in any form - would demand dedicated capacity at hand.

Photos can be delivered over time as system restraints dictate.

And capacity constrained carriers may continue to protect core voice services.

In light of capacity constraints, are grainy photos the zenith of GPRS data service capability?

By all indications, yes.

But why is Vodafone only projecting 1 mln (apparently Japanese) picture phone sales in all of Europe by March?
