exercise in those instances -- often a good strategy if there is a gap down. pretty easy to get the shares bought -- much easier in a fast market than selling the option

if you have a ton of contracts -- it's not doable, but ...

So I guess you got hosed by the market makers, or maybe somebody upstream of them, i.e. it could be because of who you're dealing with and where they send their order flow.

Are you using an ECN or a big brokerage house? And do you know what their order routing procedures are?
