New York could elect the president in 1792 (they went along with Washington, as did everyone else in the nation. The first close election was 1800, Burr(NY) vs Jefferson (VA), and was decided after a bloodletting in the House) . A city of 50,000 was a major world population center at that time.

New York, at 50,000 was 1.6% of the nation's population. With one third of the people living on the frontier, NY had twice the voting power as that 1.6%. Today, NY is 2.6%, and there is no frontier, so it's impact is smaller. There are, however, many more cities (most of them decaying socialist sewers, run by corrupt political machines, like New York), so the impact of city influence of the presidential popular vote has neither increased nor diminished. The negative effects on the preservation of liberty of allowing the cities to dictate the president are equally as dangerous today as the Founders determined them to be in the late 1700's. The justification for an electoral college is even stronger after the almost-successful Democratic fraud of 2000, where most of their 2 million fabricated votes came from those socialist sewers, the cities...
